Mammites wingi was named by Morrow (1935). Its type specimen is Holotype (no number), a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Morrowites.
It was recombined as Morrowites wingi by Cobban and Hook (1983), Amédro and Hancock (1985), Kennedy and Gale (2016).
