Taxonomy
Trachysagenites was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites erinaceus.

It was reranked as Sagenites (Trachysagenites) by Smith (1904), Hyatt and Smith (1905).

It was assigned to Sagenites by Smith (1904), Hyatt and Smith (1905); to Sagenitinae by Spath (1951); to Trachyceratidae by Tozer (1981); to Trachyceratinae by Tozer (1994); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sagenitinae by Lukeneder and Lukeneder (2014).
