Diptychoceras laevis was named by Gabb (1869). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cottonwood Creek, which is in an Albian marine claystone in the Budden Canyon Formation of California.
It was corrected as Diptychoceras laeve by Anderson (1938); it was recombined as Ptychoceras laeve by Imlay (1960).
