Taxonomy
Orthoceras was named by Breynius (1832). It is the type genus of Orthoceratinae.

It was synonymized objectively with Nodosaria by Sweet (1964).

It was assigned to Cephalopoda by Münster (1841); to Orthoceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Orthoceratidae by von Mojsisovics (1882), von Mojsisovics (1896), Diener (1897), Crick (1981), Evans (1994); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
