Sowerbyceras was named by Parona and Bonarelli (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-l J Kimm-u].

It was reranked as Phylloceras (Sowerbyceras) by Till (1910).

It was assigned to Phylloceras by Till (1910); to Calliphylloceratinae by Wright et al. (1996); to Phylloceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychophylloceratinae by Grigore (2011) and Grigore (2013).
