Venezoliceras was named by Spath (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-m K Albi-u].

It was reranked as Oxytropidoceras (Venezoliceras) by Förster (1975), Renz (1982), Kennedy and Klinger (2011) and El Qot (2018).

It was assigned to Dipoloceratidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Mojsisovicziinae by Young (1966); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Oxytropidoceras by Förster (1975), Renz (1982), Kennedy and Klinger (2011) and El Qot (2018).
