Whitfieldoceras gracile was named by Flower (1952). Its type specimen is a specimen in the collection of G. Winston Sinclair, a shell, and it is a cast. Its type locality is Lakefield, which is in a Shermanian carbonate limestone in the Sherman Falls limestone Formation of Canada.
