Simbirskites was named by Pavlow (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-l K Haut-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Ammonites decheni.

It was reranked as Olcostephanus (Simbirskites) by Stanton (1895).

It was assigned to Olcostephanus by Stanton (1895); to Simbirskitidae by Whitehouse (1926), Whitehouse (1927); to Ammonoidea by Imlay (1960), Sepkoski (2002); and to Simbirskitinae by Alsen (2006).
