Dhrumaites was named by Arkell (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-u]. Its type is Dhrumaites cardioceratoides.

It was assigned to Clydoniceratidae by Arkell (1952), Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
