Taxonomy
Ammonites rhotomagensis was named by Brongniart (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Cenomanian; Cosmopolitan.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Acanthoceras, Metacanthoplites.
It was recombined as Metacanthoplites rhotomagensis by Hyatt (1900); it was recombined as Acanthoceras rhotomagensis by Kennedy (1994); it was misspelled as Acanthoceras rotomagense by Taubenhaus (1920); it was recombined as Acanthoceras rhotomagense by Neumayr (1875), Förster (1975), Zaborski (1990), Matsumoto and Skwarko (1991), Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993), Barroso-Barcenilla (2004), Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2011), Gale et al. (2018).
It was recombined as Metacanthoplites rhotomagensis by Hyatt (1900); it was recombined as Acanthoceras rhotomagensis by Kennedy (1994); it was misspelled as Acanthoceras rotomagense by Taubenhaus (1920); it was recombined as Acanthoceras rhotomagense by Neumayr (1875), Förster (1975), Zaborski (1990), Matsumoto and Skwarko (1991), Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993), Barroso-Barcenilla (2004), Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2011), Gale et al.
