Nautilus hecticus was named by Reinecke (1818). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Harpoceras hecticum by Waagen (1875); it was recombined as Hecticoceras hecticum by Jeannet (1951); it was recombined as Hecticoceras hecticus by Cantu-Chapa (1962).
