Pyrula papyratia was named by Say (1822). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ficus communis by Hendy et al. (2008); it was recombined as Ficus papyratia by Gardner (1943), Squires (2014).
