Dunveganoceras was named by Warren and Stelck (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u]. Its type is Acanthoceras albertense.

It was assigned to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy and Cobban (1990), Wright et al. (1996); to Mammitinae by Cooper (1998); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
