Popanoceras scrobiculatum was named by Gemmellaro (1887).
It was recombined as Tauroceras scrobiculatum by Vasicek and Kullmann (1988), Sone et al. (2001), Leonova (2002), Zhou and Yang (2005); it was recombined as Neopopanoceras scrobiculatum by Furnish et al. (2009), Ehiro (2022).
