Erymnocerites was named by Jeannet (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-m]. Its type is Erymnocerites argoviensis.

It was assigned to Pachyceratidae by Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
