Taxonomy
Orthoceras brainerdi was named by Whitfield (1886). It is the type species of Proterocameroceras.

It was recombined as Cameroceras (Proterocameroceras) brainerdi by Ruedemann (1906); it was recombined as Proterocameroceras brainerdi by Ruedemann (1905), Flower (1941), Kröger and Landing (2009), Evans (2011).
