Spatangus bufo was named by Brongniart (1822). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Hemiaster, Hemiaster (Hemiaster).
It was recombined as Hemiaster (Hemiaster) bufo by Fischer (1966); it was recombined as Hemiaster bufo by McNamara (1987).
