Melvius chauliodous

Taxonomy
Amia chauliodeia was named by Hall and Wolberg (1989). Its type specimen is KUVP 88378, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is DMNH 5812, which is in a Campanian pond mudstone in the Fruitland Formation of New Mexico.

It was recombined as Melvius chauliodous by Grande and Bemis (1998), Sullivan et al. (2011).

Wolberg 1989Diagnosis. -A large, robust amiid with total length greater than one meter; dentary thickened anteriorly with at least 25 teeth; alveoli on outer margin of bone extending to posterior margin of dentary and decreasing in size posteriorly; dentary and angular lacking internal sensory canals; metaptyergoid almost square in shape with relatively small metapterygoid pro ess.
