Hemiptychoceras was named by Spath (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Ceno-l]. Its type is Ptychoceras gaultinum.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hamitidae by Kennedy (1994), Szives (2007).
