Pseudopetalichthida was named by Denison (1975).

It was reranked as the family Pseudopetalichthyidae by Gregory (1973); it was corrected as Pseudopetalichthyida by Denison (1975), Denison (1978), Dineley and Metcalf (1999), Young (2010); it was corrected as Pseudopetalichthyiformes by Nelson et al. (2016), van der Laan (2019).

It was assigned to Placodermi by Denison (1975); and to Placodermi by Gregory (1973), Denison (1978), Dineley and Metcalf (1999), Sepkoski (2002), Young (2010), Nelson et al. (2016), van der Laan (2019).
