Hybonoticeras was named by Breistroffer (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u J Tith-l]. Its type is Ammonites hybonotus.

It was assigned to Hybonoticeratinae by Olóriz et al. (2000); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
