Kosmermoceras was named by Arkell (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u]. Its type is Ermoceras (Kosmermoceras) runcinatum.

It was reranked as Ermoceras (Kosmermoceras) by Arkell (1952).

It was assigned to Ermoceras by Arkell (1952); to Stephanoceratidae by Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
