Libycoceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u K Maes-l]. Its type is Sphenodiscus ismaelis.
It was assigned to Libycoceratidae by Zaborski (1982); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Sphenodiscinae by Wright et al. (1996), Ahmad et al. (2015); and to Sphenodiscidae by Hyatt (1903), Kennedy (1995), Kennedy (1999), Jagt et al. (2019).
It was assigned to Libycoceratidae by Zaborski (1982); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Sphenodiscinae by Wright et al. (1996), Ahmad et al. (2015); and to Sphenodiscidae by Hyatt (1903), Kennedy (1995), Kennedy (1999), Jagt et al. (2019).
