Gastrochaenolites cluniformis was named by Kelly and Bromley (1984). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is BMNH L21602, an other, and it is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Maidstone, Kent [Hythe Fm], which is in an Aptian marine limestone in the Hythe Formation of the United Kingdom.
