Morrowites was named by Cobban and Hook (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l]. Its type is Mammites wingi.

It was assigned to Mammitinae by Cobban and Hook (1983); to Acanthoceratidae by Kennedy and Cobban (1988); to Euomphaloceratinae by Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
