Neolobites was named by Fisher (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u]. It was considered monophyletic by Kennedy and Juignet (1981), Weise and Schulze (2005), Bulot (2010).
It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Engonoceratidae by Pervinquière (1907), Kennedy and Juignet (1981), Kennedy and Simmons (1991), Meister et al. (1992), Meister et al. (1994), Kennedy (1994), Weise and Schulze (2005), Aly et al. (2008), Bulot (2010), Guendouz et al. (2022).
