Ceratodus avus was named by Woodward (1906). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Eagle's Nest, Inverloch, which is in an Aptian fluvial sandstone/mudstone in the "Wonthaggi" Formation of Australia.
It was recombined as Archaeoceratodus avus by Woodward (1906), Kemp (1997), Schultze (2004).
