Nicklesia was named by Hyatt (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-u K Barr-u]. Its type is Ammonites pulchellus.

It was assigned to Pulchelliidae by Haas (1960); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
