Spatangus depressus was named by Dubois (1843). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Brissoides depressus by Sanchez Roig (1926); it was recombined as Megapatagus depressus by Sanchez Roig (1953); it was recombined as Eupatagus depressus by Jackson (1922) and Kroh (2007).
