Prionocycloceras was named by Spath (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l K Coni-l].

It was assigned to Collignoniceratinae by Futakami (1991), Wright et al. (1996); to Peroniceratinae by Gebhardt (2001); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
