Astrocoenia japonica was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Hideshima, Sakiyama-mura, Moshi Sandstone, which is in an Aptian perireef or subreef sandstone in the Moshi Sandstone Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Stephanocoenia japonica by Eguchi (1951); it was recombined as Stelidioseris japonica by Löser (2012) and Löser et al. (2018).
