Protengonoceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-m]. Its type is Engonoceras gabbi.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Engonoceratidae by Kennedy et al. (1998), Bulot (2010) and Robert et al. (2018).
