Taxonomy
Ptychoceras was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u K Albi-u]. It is the type genus of Ptychoceratidae.

It was reranked as Hamites (Ptychoceras) by Anderson (1902); it was reranked as Hemiptychoceras (Ptychoceras) by Kennedy (1994).

It was assigned to Hamites by Anderson (1902); to Hemiptychoceras by Kennedy (1994); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychoceratidae by Wright (1952), Henderson (1990), Kakabadze and Hoedemaeker (1997), Landra et al. (2000), Szives (2007), Klein et al. (2007).
