Sanmartinoceras was named by Bonarelli (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u K Albi-l].

It was assigned to Aconeceratidae by Whitehouse (1926), Whitehouse (1927); to Aconeceratinae by Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
