Taxonomy

Aetosauridae was named by Baur (1887). Its type is Aetosaurus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Aetosaurinae by Kuhn (1966), Heckert and Lucas (2000), Parker (2007) and Parker (2016).

It was assigned to Crocodilia by Baur (1887); to Aetosauri by Jaekel (1910); to Thecodontia by Watson (1917); to Aetosauria by Hay (1902), Lull (1915) and Lull (1917); to Aetosauriformes by Hay (1930); to Stagonolepoidea by Kuhn (1964); to Stagonolepidae by Kuhn (1966); to Pseudosuchia by Huene (1922), Huene (1942), Kuhn (1946) and Charig (1967); to Pseudosuchida by Kuhn (1971); and to Stagonolepididae by Heckert and Lucas (2000), Parker (2007) and Parker (2016).

Synonyms

Argentinosuchus bonapartei was named by Casamiquela (1960). Its type specimen is PVL 2091, a set of postcrania (Partial forelimb and several scutes), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hoyada de Ischiqualasto, middle third, which is in a Carnian/Norian terrestrial horizon in the Ischigualasto Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Argentinosuchus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heckert and Lucas (2002) and Desojo and Ezcurra (2011).
Desmatosuchidae was named by Case (1920). Its type is Desmatosuchus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Aetosauridae by Kuhn (1964).

It was assigned to Desmatosuchia by Case (1920); to Desmatosuchiformes by Hay (1930); and to Parasuchia by Huene (1922) and Kuhn (1946).
Argentinosuchus was named by Casamiquela (1960). Its type is Argentinosuchus bonapartei.

It was synonymized subjectively with Stagonolepis by Heckert and Lucas (1999) and Heckert and Lucas (2002); it was considered a nomen dubium by Desojo and Ezcurra (2011).

It was assigned to Stagonolepidae by Casamiquela (1960); to Aetosauridae by Charig (1967); and to Stagnolepididae by Carroll (1988).
