Stephanoceras was named by Waagen (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: J Aale J Bajo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites humphriesianus. It is the type genus of Stephanocerataceae, Stephanoceratidae.
It was reranked as Ammonites (Stephanoceras) by Meneghini (1875) and Crick (1894); it was reranked as Coeloceras (Stephanoceras) by Prinz (1904); it was misspelled as Stepheoceras by Roman (1930), Arkell (1952), Arkell et al. (1957), Sandoval and Westermann (1986) and Sepkoski (2002).
It was assigned to Ammonites by Meneghini (1875) and Crick (1894); to Coeloceras by Prinz (1904); to Ammonitida by Roman (1930); to Stephanoceratidae by Arkell (1952) and Arkell et al. (1957); to Stephanoceratinae by Sandoval and Westermann (1986); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
