Sutneria was named by Zittel (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Aulacostephanidae by Grigore (2009); and to Aspidoceratidae by Parent et al. (2011) and Grigore (2013).
