Kambara was named by Willis et al. (1993). Its type is Kambara murgonensis.
It was assigned to Mekosuchinae by Willis et al. (1993), Molnar et al. (2002), Jouve et al. (2008) and Buchanan (2009); and to Mekosuchinae by Salisbury and Willis (1996), Rio and Mannion (2021) and Ristevski et al. (2022).
