Athleta (Volutospina) caracoli was named by Anderson (1928) [TYPE SPECIMEN: First listed syntype used.]. Its type specimen is CAS 2689, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is El Carmen, 6 mi. W of (Horizon F), which is in a Bartonian coastal shale/sandstone in Colombia.
It was recombined as Morum (Herculea) caracoli by Clark and Durham (1946).
