Dicoelites was named by Boehm (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Kimm Sepkoski's reference number: 308]. Its type is Belemnites dicoelus.

It was reranked as Belemnites (Dicoelites) by Stefanini (1925).

It was assigned to Belemnites by Stefanini (1925); to Dicoelitidae by Sachs and Nalnjaeva (1967); and to Belemnitida by Sepkoski (2002).
