Taxonomy
Megateuthis was named by Bayle (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: J Aale J Call-l Sepkoski's reference number: 308]. Its type is Belemnites giganteus.

It was reranked as Belemnites (Megateuthis) by Gemmellaro (1911).

It was assigned to Belemnites by Gemmellaro (1911); and to Megateuthididae by Dzyuba and de Lagausie (2018).
