Taxonomy
Dorateuthis was named by Woodward (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-u Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is not extant. Its type is Dorateuthis syriaca.

It was assigned to Leptoteuthididae by Jeletzky (1966); to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plesioteuthididae by Fuchs (2006), Fuchs and Larson (2011), Jattiot et al. (2015).
