Mastigophora was named by Owen (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call K Apti-l Sepkoski's reference number: 307,1066]. It is the type genus of Mastigophoridae.
It was assigned to Loligosepiidae by Jeletzky (1966); to Mastigophoridae by Engeser and Reitner (1985); and to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002).
