Alococoncha was named by Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi , O Llde Sepkoski's reference number: 1046]. Its type is Isoarca crassatellaeformis.

It was assigned to Ctenodontidae by Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977); and to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002).
