Pecten phrygium was named by Dall (1886). It is extant.

It was recombined as Aequipecten (Aequipecten) phrygium by Abbott (1954); it was recombined as Aequipecten phrygium by Abbott (1974); it was recombined as Cryptopecten phrygium by Woodring (1982) and Waller (2011).
