Exlinellidae was named by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Exlinella.

It was assigned to Holothuroidea by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962); and to Molpadiida by Pawson (1966) and Frizzell and Exline (1966).
