Phantomosaurus was named by Maisch and Matzke (2000). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Merriamosauriformes by McGowan and Motani (2003); and to Cymbospondylidae by Maisch and Matzke (2000), Maisch and Matzke (2006) and Maisch (2010).
