Africogryphaea was named by Freneix (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-u J Call Sepkoski's reference number: 99]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gryphaeinae by Vokes (1980); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
