Cryptopecten was named by Dall et al. (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R]. It is extant. Its type is Cryptopecten alli.

It was reranked as Pecten (Cryptopecten) by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945).

It was assigned to Pecten by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945); to Pectinidae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); to Chlamydinae by Woodring (1982), Todd (2001); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
