Pectunculus giganteus was named by Reeve (1843). It is extant.
It was recombined as Glycymeris gigantea by Jordan (1924), Hanna (1926) and Stanton (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Glycymeris maculata by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Glycymeris (Glycymeris) gigantea by Moore (1983) and Powell (2008).
